What is a Self Managed Super Fund?
According to the Australian Taxation Office, “like other superannuation (super) funds, self-managed super funds (SMSFs) are a way of saving for your retirement. The difference between an SMSF and other types of funds is that, generally, the members of an SMSF are also the trustees. This means the members of the SMSF run it for their own benefit.”
Why should I have a SMSF?
A SMSF is usually run by a family unit of 1 to 4 members who are also trustees of the fund. Therefore, the SMSF is run for the benefit of the members. The trustees have control of where the money is invested. Many people prefer this option to traditional Super funds as they get to retain control.
Another real benefit of setting up a family controlled SMSF is that they can provide you with the opportunity to reduce income tax on investment income and capital gains. This could be the difference between a comfortable retirement and a barely adequate living in your old age.
